The 2013 Backspace Writers Conference and Agent-Author Day will be held May 23rd to 25th at The Radisson Martinique (32nd and Broadway), in New York City.
The conference rate for hotel sleeping rooms will be $295/night this year, that price valid from May 22nd to May 26th.
We at Backspace encourage you to utilize all available options to find affordable accommodations (some options are listed below), and please keep in mind there are dozens of hotels within walking distance of the Radisson Martinique.
Rate is based on a two-person occupancy. When you call to book your reservations, you will have a choice of a King, Queen or two Double bedded room (the rate is valid for all three types), either smoking or non-smoking. There will be additional charges if there are more than two people per room.
To receive the conference rate, you can call the hotel directly everyday between 9 am and 5 pm (EST) at 212.736.3800 – and ask for the sales department (ext. 1340). Any other time, you can call the Central Reservations Dept. at (800) 967-9033. Don’t forget to mention that you are attending the Backspace Conference to ensure you get the best rate available.

Hello folks! As you’ve no doubt realized, the cost to rent a hotel room in the Big Apple is roughly equivalent to one month’s mortgage (and that’s not even a joke!), and I know many people have questions, so I thought I’d take a few minutes and try to answer them.
Do I have to stay at the Radisson?
The answer is an unequivocal no. You absolutely do not have to stay at the Radisson. Although there are definite benefits to being in the same hotel as the conference, just about any hotel in mid-town Manhattan is little more than a short walk or quick cab ride away. Plus, we have plenty of room on the conference floor, so if you need to check out of your hotel the morning of the conference we will gladly store your luggage for you.
Why are hotel rooms so expensive in Manhattan?
It was once explained to me that hotel rooms in Manhattan are similar to seats on an airplane: the more rooms are full in any given hotel on any given day, the more expensive the remaining rooms become. So, it’s perfectly normal for two hotels of equal value to offer completely different rates on any given day depending upon their level of occupancy. We’re usually able to get a better rate for our May Writers Conference because we can guarantee more rooms for the hotel.
Even if you want to stay at the Radisson, I urge you to do your due diligence. A few minutes of your time right now may save you quite a bit of money. For instance, call the Radisson national number at 1-800-967-9033 and ask for rates for the nights you’ll need. Then, check online at Radisson.com and use their handy little reservation tool to look for prices and additional deals and compare those rates to the rate posted on our conference website to decide which is best for you.
If you’re flying into NYC, check out all of your options. You will often find a discount by packaging your flight and hotel room together, and often you’ll be able to secure a better rate at a nearby hotel, or even at the Radisson. I’d recommend online sites like Expedia.com and Priceline.com, but there are dozens out there for you to choose from.

I want to come to the conference, but New York City is so expensive! How can I cut costs?
It’s true, midtown Manhattan can be expensive. But you don’t have to pay upwards of $300 per night for a hotel room. Excellent room rates can be obtained by booking sleeping accommodations through online website like Travelocity, Expedia and Orbitz.
Alternatively, if you don’t mind traveling, many hotels in New Jersey are much less expensive and offer shuttles to the train station. Fifteen minutes by train takes you to Penn Station, and from there, the Radisson is a short, two-block walk. Just keep in mind that the last train back to New Jersey leaves NYC around 10:00 p.m.
